Microsoft’s launch is set to include popular titles such as “Candy Crush” and “Minecraft,” with initial offerings centred around Microsoft’s first-party portfolio. The company has plans to later extend access to third-party developers.
The decision to start with a web-based store is designed to leverage the advantage of universal accessibility despite the varying global regulations on app distribution.
iOS users in the EU now have sideloading capabilities due to local regulations forcing Apple to allow third-party app stores, but this is not the case worldwide. Microsoft’s web-based approach thus provides a strategic workaround to these limitations.
“In July, we are going to be launching our mobile store experience,” Bond stated. “We’re going to start, actually, by bringing our own first-party portfolio to that. So you’re going to see games like Candy Crush show up in that experience, games like Minecraft. And then we’re going to extend that capability to partners so that they can take advantage of it and have a true cross-platform gaming-centric mobile experience,” she added.
This innovative deployment method not only challenges the status quo set by Apple and Google but also seems to hint at the potential role of cloud gaming in distributing games through the internet.
While Microsoft’s new store is a significant step towards providing an alternative to established app stores, the full realisation of its vision to include third-party support and broader store functionalities appears to be some distance away. This initial launch phase focuses on proving the viability of web-based game distribution and setting a foundation for future expansion.
